History

The word Butterscotch was first recorded in Doncaster. In 1817 Samuel Parkinson had started to make a Butterery brittle toffee, it was one to become one of Doncaster's most famous exports and the Royal highlight of the St Leger race week. For many years the company carried the Royal seal of approval.
Parkinson's shop was called Capo, or Upstairs Downstairs on the High Street. S Parkinson & Son (Doncaster) Ltd was established by Samuel Parkinson, confectioner, grocer and tea dealer, in High Street Doncaster in the early nineteenth century. The Parkinson family connection ceased in 1893 on the sale of the business to Samuel Balmforth and a sleeping partner. Incorporation as a limited company followed in 1912.

Thereafter the main emphasis of the business was on the manufacture of confectionery which had begun in the mid-nineteenth century with the production of baking powder and the firm's best known product, Parkinson's Doncaster Butterscotch. In 1961 the company was acquired by the Holland's Confectionery Group. The business ceased production in 1977.
In 2003, a Doncaster Businessman emptied an old box found in a cellar. The Box contained one of the famous St Leger Tins. The Businessman placed the Tin on a pile of old items to throw-away. Later that day the Businessman's Wife arrived and took a shine to the Tin, upon opening the Tin she discovered an old piece of paper. The paper was folded and contained a detailed description of the recipe for Butterscotch.
Today Parkinson's Doncaster Butterscotch makes all of its butterscotch to this recipe.
